As a result of the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995, if you are a newly qualified driver you must now go through a probationary period of 2 years after passing your first driving test. If you are convicted of a motoring offence during this probationary period and have 6 or more penalty points on your licence you will have your full licence revoked, but you may still continue to drive provided you have a provisional licence. You will be in the position of a learner driver until you pass a test again. Once you pass a second test the probationary period ends.
The important point to remember is that on revocation the driver is not disqualified. As long as you have a provisional licence and abide by the terms under which it is given you commit no offence.
If as a “new” driver with a clean licence you are disqualified for a speeding offence you do not have your licence revoked. This only happens if 6 points are endorsed on the licence.
